Public Rallies Around Lesbian Victims of Vandalism
Gay rights advocates in Portland, Maine rallied together Saturday in a support of a lesbian couple whose home was vandalized in what local police call a hate crime. About 200 people turned out in downtown Portland's Monument Square, the day after two juveniles, ages 12 and 14, were arrested on a string of charges in connection with the June 1 break-in and vandalism at the mobile home of Keri Fuchs and Linda Boutaugh.

Maine Voters to Decide on Gay Rights Legislation Once Again

Just months after Legislature passed a civil rights law extending protection from discrimination to gays and lesbians, Maine voters will be asked for a fourth time in less than a decade whether this is legal protection they wish to extend. 'Irrelevant' Gay Gene/Pro Life Bill is Killed

Legislation attempting to prohibit abortions on unborn children thought to be carrying the “gay gene” has gone down in defeat after failing to receive a single vote in a state panel. The bill was based on the contention that, if scientists ever discovered a gene that causes a person to be a homosexual, some parents might have abortions on such babies as a result.

Maine Gives Final Seal of Approval to Gay Rights Bill

A gay rights bill intended to protect gay and lesbian citizens from discrimination has been given the final stamp of approval from State lawmakers and is expected to be signed into law later today by Gov. John Baldacci.
The bill would amend the Maine Human Rights Act by making it illegal to discriminate in employment, housing, credit, public accommodations and education based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Maine Senate Passes Gay Rights Bill by Wide Margin

Strong Senate support of a ban on discrimination against gays and lesbians in Maine passed the bill 25-10 Monday, moving the measure to the House where a vote could be held as soon as today. The proposed bill would add sexual orientation protections to the Maine Human Rights Act.
